Masses of Compact Galactic Objects
نویسنده
چکیده
Andrew Gould (Ohio state University) and B. Scott Gaudi (Ohio state University) 5 Using the technique of gravitational microlensing, SIM Lite will conduct a representative census of all compact Galactic objects from brown dwarfs to black holes, including white dwarfs, neutron stars, and main sequence stars. The masses of these objects will be derived from a combination of precise measurement of the tiny astrometric deflections that are generated by all microlensing events with a photometric “microlens parallax” measurement. The latter is possible because SIM Lite will be in solar orbit, which means that it measures a “different” photometric event compared to what is seen from the ground. No other known technique can undertake such a systematic survey, although Gaia and ground-based interferometers might succeed in measuring the masses of some black holes. X - rays from cusps of compact remnants near galactic centres
Compact remnants – stellar mass black holes and neutron stars formed in the inner few parsec of galactic centres are predicted to sink into the central parsec due to dynamical friction on low mass stars, forming a high concentration cusp (Morris, 1993). Same physical region may also contain very high density molecular clouds and accretion discs that are needed to fuel SMBH activity. Here we est...
متن کاملThe effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations
Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...
متن کاملBlack Holes in Astrophysics
This article reviews the current status of black hole astrophysics, focusing on topics of interest to a physics audience. Astronomers have discovered dozens of compact objects with masses greater than 3M⊙, the likely maximum mass of a neutron star. These objects are identified as black hole candidates. Some of the candidates have masses ∼ 5− 20M⊙ and are found in X-ray binaries, while the rest ...
متن کاملOn the question of trapped surfaces and black holes
There are many observational evidences for the detection of compact objects with masses significantly larger (in galactic cases) or much larger (in extragalactic cases) than the upper limits of masses of cold Neutron Stars. Such compact objects are commonly interpreted as Black Holes (BHs). However, we point out that while such Black Hole Candidates (BHCs) must be similar to BHs in many respect...
متن کاملSolar Mass Objects?
If the dark matter in galactic halos is made up of compact, macroscopic objects (MO), such as black holes with M M O >> M stars , gravitational scattering will lead to kinematic heating of the stars. Observational constraints on the amount of heating in the disk of the Milky Way put upper limits on M M O < ∼ 10 6.3 M ⊙. We find limits that are three orders of magnitude more stringent by examini...
